At the heart of all GB Labs products is our Core operating system

Core OS allows users to focus on creativity and productivity, not system management. A web interface that is designed for creatives and approved by IT.

Introduction

The Core operating system (OS) at the heart of all GB Labs systems is unique and purpose built to achieve great things. The latest variant Core 3 consists of an intuitive interface that brings simplicity to a powerful purpose built Linux OS.

The limitations of general purpose OS are stripped away allowing Core OS 3 to deliver limitless performance and provide sustained and uninterrupted file sharing that makes it different to any other NAS on the market.

The needs of the global media industry have driven GB Labs to deliver a feature rich toolset, tailor made to the demands of modern file based workflows. What is more, Core 3 is completely platform agnostic with total cross platform compatibility, allowing PC, Mac and Linux platforms to collaborate and share data freely and efficiently.

Business continuity is ensured with intelligent replication and failover tools, there is also automatic failover technology available (Echo 36) that ensures up time and continual availability, providing the ‘no single point of failure’ that so many systems strive for.

On the client side, there is no software installation required, which means nothing to go out of date when your OS updates. There is also no client licensing to worry about which means more users won't cost you and your workgroup size can be whatever size you like.

Automation

The automation tool allows you to move data between storage tiers based on rules you set yourself. This may be for example that in two weeks time you want a project moved from your online storage to your nearline storage to ensure you are getting optimum performance from your online.

It may be that when a file on your online storage has not been accessed for one month, the file is then automatically moved to your nearline storage. Equally, you could make a rule that if a project file on your nearline storage has not been used for six months, it is automatically written to LTO archive.

By automating your workflow you save manual management time, you are less likely to have to spend more money on expensive online storage and your storage tiers act as an intelligent ecosystem effortlesly in the backgrond.

Replication

The replication tool allows you to automatically make snapshot copies of your data from one tier of storage to another.

Replication schedules are created within the storage and carried out automatically with in-built reporting tools feeding back system events and completion data.

SnapShot

The Core OS 3 snapshot feature supports all GB Labs products and 3rd party sources and destinations. The snapshot is a set of reference markers, pointers or data stored on your GB Labs storage or other network attached storage (NAS.) This feature provides is a detailed table of contents that is treated by the Core OS as a complete data backup.

Snapshots streamline access to stored data and can speed up the process of data recovery whilst maintaining efficient storage utilisation. The Snapshot tool allows you to take incremental backups of a workspace, which in turn allows you to then recover a workspace at a specific point in time, which is particularly useful if accidental deletion or file corruption occurs.

Bandwidth Control

The bandwidth control feature gives administrators complete control of the data throughput given to individual users or workstations connected to a GB Labs storage platform. Data rate for ‘Read’ or ‘Write’ can be independently controlled using MB/sec, allowing sophisticated quality of service (QOS) policies to be implemented on the network without the need for independent switch throttling techniques.
